Volunteers will be asked to help sweep around headstones, rake leaves, remove trash and branches.
The Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery is a unique cultural treasure of local history. Officially established in 1917, Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery contains approximately 1,700 graves of Mexican & Native American farm workers and U.S. Veterans that labored on the local historic cotton fields and farms of the Southwest Cotton Company (a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) to help with WWI tire production and the growing demands of modern transportation. Over time, the privately owned cemetery fell into disrepair and was to be sold for housing development. With the enlisted help of the community, Ballet Folklorico Esperanza gained the support of the City of Avondale to adopt the cemetery as a historic landmark.
We welcome volunteers from all walks of life that are driven in helping us beautify this historic landmark to its former glory. Furthermore, we look forward in sharing the history and commemorate the farm workers, their families and veterans buried at this once forgotten cemetery.
